The Impact of Micro Messaging in the Workplace
Presented by Gabriela (Gaby) Flores, MSM, Associate Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer for Metropolitan Community College
Negative micro-messages (or micro-aggressions) are defined as brief and commonplace daily, verbal, behavioral, or environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative slights and insults toward members of oppressed groups” (Nadal, 2008, p. 23). In this luncheon Gaby will discuss how to recognize negative micro-messages in the workplace and how to develop strategies for reducing them to create an environment of respect and inclusion for all.
